1907  Several times they packed everything for a mile or two, but negotiated most of the worst rapids by 'lining' down them, whilst one man kept the nose of the canoe straight with a long spruce pole.
1948  The skiff was too heavy for carrying, and to line it down as we had done in the rapids above was impossible, owing to a huge rock jutting out at a sharp angle from the shore.
1963  Rapids after rapids disappeared behind us and where there was any doubt, we waded the shallows and lined the canoes down with ropes rather than portage.
